Join us as I lead my 9th Photowalk along the historic Richmond waterfront.
While frequently just thought of as the land between Berkeley and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, few newcomers to the Bay Area know the contribution Richmond made to the war effort in World War II with the construction of 747 ships, (with some being build in less than 5 days!), nor know how internment of Asian-Americans ripped apart families, many of whom were working in the shipyards, or remember the racial decriminalization against African-Americans during and after the war.
With a waterfront the offers stunning views of the Bay, a marina which always makes great photos of boats, and a waterfront which houses the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park, and a preserved WWII era Liberty ship across the channel, this walk is sure to have a little bit for everyone.
The walk will officially begin at 4:30, but I invite you to visit the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park center at 3:30pm to gain a great appreciation of the area and the contribution women made to our victory in World War II.
Afterwards, we’ll dine in nearby Pt. Richmond around 6:30 at a location of be determined.
Have kids? Bring them along! You’re never too young to photograph, and this year, there’s a special Youth Photo Contest designed for walkers 16 years or younger.

The term mindfulness has received a lot of attention lately. But what exactly is mindfulness and how can it be incorporated in your photography, and what are the benefits? Simply put,
mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging
and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Mindfulness allows us to be more fully present so we can truly
experience that which we are there for.
We’ll start out with some exercises to quiet our minds, relax our bodies, and gain a greater appreciation of the present moment. We’ll learn not just to “take” photographs, but also how to “give” as in giving back to the people or the places that have enhanced your photography.

You’ll learn the basics of photography through the “exposure triangle” and understand the inherent trade-offs that must be chosen. You learn what the most important thing is in photography, and how to use it to your advantage no matter what camera you’re using. After you learn the language of photography, you’ll learn to tell a story with your images. See how to capture the emotion of the moment and create captivating photographs that draw people in. And finally, you’ll be introduced to organizing and optimizing your images with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. While enhancing your images to their full potential used to be limited to those willing to invest in the space and equipment required for a darkroom, the computer is the new darkroom and available to everyone. As the noted photographer Alfred Stieglitz said, “own a camera without a darkroom is like owning a leash without a dog.”

I’m interested in taking your Up Close and Personal: Macro Photography class through College of Marin. I do my photography strictly with film – in both medium format and large format. Is this class only for those shooting with digital or would film camera buffs be welcomed as well?

    Thank you.

      Ken,

This class will be well suited to film shooter as well as digital shooters. Since I’ll be spending time on tools, techniques, and approach, rather than digital post processing, there will be plenty for you! As one who started in a home darkroom in 1974, I still feel that you can’t call yourself a photographer until you see the image appearing in the “soup” so you’ll be in go company with me. If you do take the class, I encourage you to complete my Digital Skills Assessment found here. It will help me to assess your strength and challenges and help me to prepare to best meet your needs. I would also be happy to critique your work. I hope to see you in class! If you have additional questions, please contact me. Thanks!

Are there still openings in your up coming DAM and Lightroom developing classes. If so, how do I register. Thanks Janne

  • Nancy Bateman says:

I truly enjoyed your “Intro to Lightroom” class on February 15, 2014. I learned new information and ideas. I, like you, believe this class would be more beneficial if it were on a 2 day schedule, rather than one. There was a significant amount of information to grasp and I did retain a lot as well as took a lot of notes. However, I found myself getting to the point of “information overload” and that was not good for me. Additionally, to actually have a workshop where “hands-on” opportunities were provided would help solidify some of the more critical aspects particularly when it comes to development of photos. But that is my take as I’m more of a “hands-on” learner. You are an excellent teacher and you know your stuff. As a old adage goes, “patience is a virtue” and you definitely have that skill locked in.
